Instruction for Young People in the Use of Wood-Working tools, with Specific Directions for Making Articles of Beauty and Utility. By Peter Parley, Jr. 10 x 8 cloth hardcover decorated in black and gilt. Condition: GOOD ANTIQUE CONDITION. The exterior retains an attractive appearance as seen in photos. Light wear at corners and spine ends. Text block firm and secure. Text is clean and complete. No torn, loose or missing pages. Handwritten gift inscription (a bit grandiose) inside front cover, also an earlier owner’s ink stamp on blank prelims. Personalizations aside, a nice example of this very rare Victorian title. This is a rare guide to Victorian domestic life, household etiquette, personal appearance and comportment, weddings, child-rearing and education, entertaining, parlor games, and even detailed how-to instructions for period handcrafts such as carpentry, stenciling, clay modeling, waxwork and more. Also, as befits any Victorian book worth its salt, there is also advice on how to deal with death and mourning. It is a veritable treasury of Victorian Americana. Along with practical advice and instruction for the Victorian lady (manners, social situations, how to deal with servants, etc), it also contains detailed instructions on parlor games, magic tricks or sleight of hand, chemistry experiments, fancy work such as macramé lace even carpentry and wood engraving projects for boys and waxwork flower-making for girls. The book features a beautiful binding adorned with gilt and black decoration characteristic of gift books of the 1880s. Inside, the pages are Elegantly Illustrated with numerous steel engravings and sketches, many full-page in size. No human names thrill and stir us like the lyric names of Child, Mother and Home. None contain such a wealth of affection, or such elements of tender remembrance. None bind us so closely to the law of duty, and the law of love. None bring heaven so near, and make it so real. No work therefore can be more important than an earnest and well-directed effort to make the Homes of our country truly Bright and Happy. It is a task worthy of an angels powers. One infinitely higher than the angels, consecrated all true conjugal love, by his presence at the marriage in Cana, and gladdened the home at Bethany by tarrying within it. The very fact that so many books have been written upon the various phases of the Home question, attests the dignity and interest of the subject. The author and editor of this volume has gleaned from many inviting fields a large portion of the material for a work, which in many particulars has never been attempted, I think, before. He has aimed to make it express an epitome of human life. He has connected the Grave with the Gay, Instruction with Amusement, Business with Relaxation, Government with Freedom, Authority with Indulgence, Devotion with Secular Affairs. And the Home above with the Home below. The Topics under which the accumulated riches of thought and expression have been arranged are fruitful in suggestiveness. They have been sufficiently amplified to make the work a Thesaurus of household wisdom. A considerable portion of the book has been devoted to technical and manual instruction, which has been conveyed in a plain, explicit manner, by minute directions and ample illustrations. It has been the evident aim of the author to make the work intensely practical and its bearings upon the conduct and management of the Home, by presenting and illustrating principles, which are capable of specific, continuous and beneficial application. In order to give you the most accurate description of this handsome 125-year-old volume, I have provided some helpful details below, starting with a thorough summary of the books contents. Further down the page, you can see some of the beautiful Victorian engravings from the book. I hope youll take a few moments to have a look.
