Victorian Moorish style hair comb with lavish faux pearl dangles
A wonderful Moorish or Algerian style hair comb with lavish pearl decoration. CONDITION: good vintage condition with expected wear. SIZE: 3½ ins h x 3½ ins w (9 x 9 cm) length of pearl dangles 6 ins (15 cm). APPROXIMATE DATE: 1840s 1850s. MATERIALS: metal, faux pearls, wire, horn. Here is a very beautiful Victorian Moorish or Algerian style faux pearl hair comb made from faux pearls. This attractive type of hair accessory is specifically designed to be worn at the rear of the hairdressing, within or covering the chignon. The comb mount is made from horn which has been dyed to simulate tortoiseshell. Attached to this by a rotating hinge is a curved brass rectangle, which provides a vehicle for the two rows of faux pearl decoration. The pearl beads are strung on fine brass wire in a channel which is designed to hold them in place. Suspended from the base of the heading, we find swags of pendants, each terminating in a pear shaped pearl bead. There is also an elaborate arrangement of looped chains which pass from one side to the other of the brass heading piece. The chains are looped from one side of the ornament to the other in a complex arrangement which is typical of this kind of ornament. All the chains are further embellished with spherical pearl beads which are pendant from the chain links. The collage picture shows further examples of such hair accessories and the hair styles with which they were worn. The effect of the ornament in wear can be seen in the pictures with the mannequin. The comb was placed in the rear of the dressing in such a way that the pendants hung down over the back hair and shook when the wearer moved. The final illustration is a compilation of Algerian or Moorish style combs drawn from contemporary engravings and portraits of the early to mid Victorian period. This comb is of a type generally called a peigne dAlger or Moorish comb. In the early 1840s the French-Algerian wars led to an interest in Moorish art, and this is strongly reflected in the design of comb headings and hairpins until about 1875. The Crimean War further helped to popularize Turkish and Oriental designs in. During the 1860s and 1970s. This Moorish influence was manifested in the use of pseudo-oriental and Islamic motifs and the use of dangling and curiously shaped pendants, looped chains beads and tassels on combs and hairpins.
