Note: Many of my clients are scholars and historians seeking specific information related to their research. Beautiful example of this rare Victorian volume. In the Victorian era, a well-bred gentleman’s or lady’s most valuable social asset was not his or her personal wealth, nor the finery of their clothes, nor the size of their residence. It was ones knowledge of etiquette that distinguished a person in the eyes of polite society. The all-important rules of behavior, both in public and in intimate settings. Many etiquette guides were published in the late 19th century, but few as elegant and informative as THE NATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BUSINESS AND SOCIAL FORMS. Notwithstanding the admittedly dry title, this handsome volume with its decorative leather binding and gorgeous illustrations is like a bible of etiquette. It contains the rules of personal deportment for all fashionable social situations, courtship, weddings, funerals and the like. It is an also an advisor on proper dress and personal hygiene for women and men. And an instructor on the proper way to write letters for all occasions, complete with sample letters. Here too you will find instructions and rules to many games and amusements for outdoor play or indoor parlor gatherings, including croquet, cricket, and baseball (which was still a novelty in the 1880s) as well as chess, backgammon and other parlor games. The book also contains numerous cooking recipes and household receipts to keep you busy. (Idle hands are the devils plaything, after all). The other portion of the book (the one responsible for that stuffy title) was intended to equip the Victorian reader with practical information and useful instruction for the world of business. It consists of chapters devoted to the art of penmanship and writing well, book-keeping, business forms, legal forms, etc. (the full chapter list can be found below). The necessity of THE NATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BUSINESS AND SOCIAL FORMS as an everyday reference for aspiring Victorians is spelled out in the Preface of the book. No allowance is made for the inexperience of young persons, and any social blunder, or awkwardness, is sharply criticized. Even those who are well informed in this respect are sometimes at a loss to know just what todo under certain circumstances. To all such a book embodying the rules recognized by the best society, and stating simply and plainly the exact thing that is required, and that should be done, must be a welcome assistance. It can be consulted at any time, and will show what the best society, in all parts of the country, regards as good manners. Both in town and country there are times when the evenings are long and dull, and we would gladly do something to enliven them if we only knew what to do. How gladly would we search through some volume devoted to home amusements if it were only at hand. To all such a work giving the most approved legal forms apt to be needed in the various relations of life, must be most welcome. The forms presented in this work are those which have been sanctioned by long usage, and by the approval of the courts in various parts of the country. It was the object of the author in the preparation of this work to cover as wide a range of subjects as was possible, without sacrificing the practical character of the book. He has aimed to make it a treasury of information upon the subjects that are constantly arising in the daily business of life of all classes. He has spared no pains to attain this object, and offers the work to the public with the hope that it may meet the needs of all classes of the American people. To render the work attractive to the young, as well as to older persons, a carefully selected series of rules and instructions in all the most popular games and amusements has been introduced. The laws of the various games presented in this volume have been drawn from the latest as well as the most reliable publications concerning them. The work embraces in a single volume the rules of all the games most popular with young persons, and of some new sports which are just being introduced into this country.
