THE FARMERS NEW GUIDE FOR FARM, FIELD AND FIRESIDE. A Compendium of Practical Information on All Subjects Relating to the Farm and Household. McClure and Thomas Bond, M. Published in 1895 by the King-Richardson Publishing Co. 9 x 6 pictorial hardcover. Condition: VERY GOOD ANTIQUE CONDITION. Exterior as shown in photo. Good binding, firm, secure. Text is clean and complete, light foxing near front. No torn, loose or missing pages. Some of the photo reproductions may appear to have lines or squiggles drawn on them, however these are part of the actual prints. Great example of this very scarce 1890s farming guide and cookbook. This very rare antique book is an informative guide to American farming and farm life as it existed in the last decade of the 19th century. When this book was published, working farms were still common in most American towns throughout the country. A book like this, loaded with practical farming information, how-to instructions, cooking recipes, household hints and more, would have been a valuable reference in many farmhouses across the land. Farm-related topics include manuring, crop selection, how to manage pastures, plowing, mowing and haying, harvesting, cultivation of fruit-bearing trees, insect control, bee-keeping, etc. There are also individual chapters devoted to the care and maintenance of farm livestock: horses, cattle, sheep, swine, and poultry. In the second part of the book, youll also find lengthy chapters on household matters, including a large section of cooking recipes, household receipts, family medicine and first aid (in those days, medical care wasnt always available in rural or sparsely populated areas of the country in an emergency, folks had only their wits and books like this to consult). Its a big volume, 786 pages in length (2.5 thick) and illustrated with full-page photo plates of cows, horses and dogs. Other illustrations, diagrams, etc. Are also found in the text. To give you a better idea of what you can expect from this rare old book, I have provided some helpful details below: a thorough description of the Contents interspersed with photos of the book and its charming illustrations. I hope youll take a few moments to have a look.
