Antique Victorian Burl Wood Box With Secret Compartments & Beaded Top English
Antique Victorian Burl Wood Box With Secret Compartments & Beaded Top English – locking with original key. This is quite a large box with some fantastic and fun details. There is some wear (please see photos), but this far outweighs the character of this box! My favorite part is the beaded top that is encased under beveled glass. It has a central rose on a bright turquoise background with a beaded design in multiple colors. It looks like a tapestry, but it is indeed, bead work. Unlike tapestry, the beads are more resistant to fading and the colors look like new. This panel measures 7 by 4 1/2 inches. Beneath the panel is one of three secret compartments. If you push down on one end of the panel, it lifts to reveal the compartment. The front if the box has two drawers, each with four divided sections. These pieces come out so that each drawer can be used for larger items, if desired. When removed, each drawer measures 9 3/4 wide, by 9 1/8 deep, and 2 3/4 high. The drawers have dovetail joint construction and are still solid. These two drawers can be locked with the original key, that will be sent with the box. Insert it slightly and a gentle turn will lock it. By removing both drawers from the box, you release the two secret side compartments, that can be opened with a push to the bottom. Once opened, there is a sliding wood door that can reveal the contents of each section. One of the sliding panels has lost a section (the wood is split off) which is pointed out in the photos. Otherwise, it functions properly and still contains what is put in it, unless its something tiny. The black sections of the box are carved; another added detail to this magnificent box. The box is veneered with what I believe to be burl wood and maple, but Im not certain. Im not sure what species of wood the black portions are, or the internal wood, but it is all hardwood. The antique condition is good, with corner wear, some chipping of the veneer at edges, and the noted interior sliding panel but nothing that detracts from the unique beauty of this antique box. The three different contrasting wood colors are very interesting and well-placed. The vibrant and stunning beaded panel is extremely rare – I havent seen another like it. The overall approximate measurements are 14 wide, 11 1/2 deep, by 10 1/4 tall. RARE ANTIQUE VICTORIAN ENGLISH BLONDE TORTOISESHELL BRACELET with HEART PADLOCK
This beautiful Victorian bracelet is made from the incredibly rare blonde tortoiseshell. Wonderfully deeply amber-coloured yet fully and magically translucent, its oversized links modelled as links of a chain, and it has a massive heart-shaped padlock clasp with ornate, solid gold fittings. It dates from around 1870 and is in very good, fully wearable condition, with some light ageing, light scratches and a few small areas of natural shell layer separation visible, these are of little consequence. It weighs 29.5 grams and measures 8 inches wearable length, the padlock being 2 x 1.5 inches. The final photo shows it with a US penny (1 cent) coin for scale, which measures 19 mm / ¾ of an inch diameter. What’s more, I offer layaway deals so there’s no need to let any of my listings slip through your fingers – just ask! Thank you for your interest in my books. JENNIE JUNES AMERICAN COOKERY BOOK is a rare antique cookbook containing some 1200-plus carefully tested cooking recipes. It stands out among other cookbooks of this vintage because in addition to hundreds of everyday recipes it includes some singular recipes that I have never seen featured in any other 19th-century cookbook or cookery collection, including recipes culled from the Oneida Indian community of upstate New York; Jewish Receipts; recipes contributed by the Sorosis Club (the first professional womens club in the United States); Favorite Recipes of Distinguished Persons (such as Henry Ward Beecher); and even A Strong-Minded Womans Receipts. I have personally prepared a detailed summary of the various recipes below. I have taken the liberty of reorganizing and rewording them a bit for clarity but all the recipes you see below are featured in the book. I hope youll take a moment to have a look.
