There is a secret base drawer with the original cribbage boards, brass score markers and playing cards of the same era, and it can be opened by pressing the silvered button which is just in front of the central decanter. It is a decorative piece which is also very practical, and would make a lovely gift. It is complete with working lock and a key that locks everything. Condition: In excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned and waxed in our workshops, the decanters with no chips or crack, please see photos for confirmation. Height 33 x Width 38 x Depth 29. Height 13.0 x Width 15.0 x Depth 11.4. Tantalus is a type of liquor decanter in which the bottle stoppers are locked down tightly by a metal bar. This was to prevent the theft of the contents by servants. Like the name suggests, the decanters themselves are visible, drawing temptation while unattainable. A key is required for entry. The most common types of tantalus holds three bottles or decanters while there are also smaller types housing only two. There are many different forms of tantalus. Often the encasement has metal handles on both sides and ornately carved decor. Crystal and metal versions are also a beautiful option when choosing a tantalus. Tantalus derived its name from the story of the mythological Greek king, Tantalus, mortal son of Zeus and Pluto. To be tantalized is to be tempted with the unattainable, and the king was sorely tested. He was condemned to an eternity in Hades for angering the Gods and was forced to stand forever in water that, when he bent to drink, would recede and to gaze upon foods he could only reach for and never grasp. The 1800s saw our Victorian predecessors apply the King’s name to the lockable decanter. “Oak tree” having approximately 600 extant species. Has a density of about 0.75 g/cm. Great strength and hardness, and is very resistant to insect and fungal attack because of its high tannin. It also has very appealing grain markings, particularly when quartersawn. Oak wood is very durable, easy to maintain and resistant to wear and tear which is why it can be easily handed to the next generations if taken well care of. Oak wood virtually lasts forever and you can still admire oak furniture in museums and palaces even if it was made many centuries ago. Oak has been prized since the Middle Ages. For use in interior panelling of prestigious buildings such as the debating chamber of the House of Commons. And in the construction of fine furniture. Take a tour of our London showrooms. Take Piccadilly line to Manor House station. Go to top of escalators and turn left. Take exit 7 and walk straight on for 10 metres. Manor Warehouse is on the right. 1873 Victorian 15K 15Ct 14k Rose Gold English Bloodstone Ring Birmingham Etched
1873 Victorian 15K 15Ct 14k Rose Gold English Bloodstone Ring Birmingham Etched. Offered today is a true Victorian bloodstone ring–this dates to Birmingham 1873 and it has an amazing, hand-etched solid 15k rose gold mounting (slightly higher karat gold fineness than 14k we are used to here in the States). This was possibly crafted as a signet ring, but was never monogrammed. The bloodstone is a deep green with a few spots of red. Checking it on an angle (difficult to see in the photos) there are a couple of teeny tiny flea bites and a very very thin hairline crack or possibly a scratch, but it is really in very intact condition. I mention this only for honesty and accuracy, and these small imperfections do not affect wear. Only visible under 10x loupe and very intact in setting. The mounting is beautifully hand-engraved, as was the case with so many antique rings (they just don’t make rings like this any more) and the setting is in great condition, especially for its age! This ring is hallmarked “15” “625” with anchor and the 1873 date stamp. It has been verified as 1873 by our experienced gemologist jeweler. The stamps are crisp and clear, and the ring has very little wear. It measures 1/2 top to bottom and weighs 2.7 grams. It is a size 6 and can be sized by any competent jeweler. Considering this ring is almost 150 years old, it’s in EXCEPTIONAL antique condition! PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THE ITEMS I SELL ARE “VINTAGE” OR ESTATE ITEMS, AND THEREFORE ARE NOT NEW–SO PLEASE EXPECT NORMAL WEAR. I WILL DO MY BEST TO DESCRIBE ANY DEFECTS/FLAWS IN THE ITEM. PLEASE VIEW THE PHOTOS CAREFULLY AS THE SUPERSIZED PHOTOS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE LISTING. I CANNOT END AUCTIONS EARLY, AND PLEASE DO NOT MAKE AN OFFER. I sell on consignment for jewelers who set the prices on my items. My pricing is UP FRONT–(not inflated just so I can lower)–and I price as low as possible, with no “wiggle room”–in order to meet my consignor’s net price. THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING. Beautiful late 1800’s metronome with bell. It keeps time very good – however the bell rings loud and clear but is jumping sometimes one beat on position 3 and 6. This great collectable item is taller than regular metronomes (10 1/2 inches/27 cm). It seems to be a special edition. I have never seen an other one like that. The case shows almost no wear. Pictures are part of the description. The item “Antique Victorian Metronome Best English Make withHinged Door & Bell / Very Rare” is in sale since Monday, December 9, 2019.
