A Traditional English Mahogany Turned Leg Parlor Side Table, c. This Table would look exceptional while displayed in an array of interior styles. The solid mahogany shows a drastic grain throughout, accompanied by a deep satin finish. This finish pairs nicely with many period pieces, perfect for staging. The square top would make a lovely lamp display, or used as an occasional table. The turned legs are drastic, and brings the entire design of the table together nicely. Antique Early Victorian Era English Sterling Silver Vermeil Vinaigrette, 1854 Hallmark. All items and photos are the express property of Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. Into it would be a wad of wool or cotton onto which drops of scented oils or perfume would be added. One need only open the cover and hold near one’s nose to manage the odor of a mid-Victorian walk through a crowd or on the busy streets of humans or animals (horse-drawn carriages) and the sewage often cast into the streets. It was a necessity, and the vinaigrettes remain a very popular little antique as jewelry or for perfume and scent collectors. This one is quite exceptional in the silversmith’s artistry. Measurements noted on the photos. Very good to excellent condition throughout. Bears hallmarks telling us it’s from Birmingham and was made in 1854. The interior and perforated grate have a layering of gold (vermeil) which would not corrode with the oils/scents, and it is nicely preserved in full. The box is sterling silver, of course. A delight of strong Gothic overtones and Pugin-esque forms. Displays a desirable aged patina and in very good order. Quality oak stocks show fine grain interest and an abundance of medullary rays. Presents rich caramel hues beneath a wax polish finish. Upright, formal appearance, suited to grace high office. Apex upper rail adorned with acanthus leaf carvings. Medallion to centre with heraldic image over extended leaf forms. Enthusiastically decorative backrest with circular arcade field panels. Stout arms with highly distinctive leaf carved knuckles. Raised upon stepped, arched supports. Green leather seat cushion accentuated with brass press studs. Standing upon chamfered legs with spade feet, united with stretcher rails.
