This is an Antique English Victorian Red Leather Clad Jewelry Box with Tray. These items are an eclectic mix including gold and sterling jewelry, and many unique, and in some cases, one of a kind items, in wood, brass, and iron, and other materials as well. The box is 7″ wide x 5″ deep and 3 high. The swivel handle on top lies in a recessed well. The articulated flower in the center of the well adds to the charm and appeal of the box. The metal of the handle assembly is nickel plated brass. You can the wear on the nickel plating adjacent to the flower and where the handle rests when flipped side to side, exposing a little of the brass below. This wear is indicative of the age and surely the result of opening and closing the box over a long period of years. On the inside, the lid is satin lined. There is a velvet lined tray with gold embossed edges and two tabs to facilitate removing the tray. There is a channel for rings on the left and right with other storage compartments between. Removing the tray reveals a storage are for larger pieces, with a satin lined floor. The top edge of the lock is engraved “IMPROVED LOCK”. As found both the escutcheon for the key hole and the key are missing, and the box is offered as found / as seen / as described in that regard. Despite these missing items, this charm jewelry box with its compact size and pleasing design would be a wonderful place to store some of your treasured pieces of antique jewelry, and it would also make a great gift. The jewelry box has the following issues to be noted. Wear on the nickel plated handle assembly as noted above. Variation in the patina of the leather as discussed above, and a few scuffed areas, small spots, and some irregularities in the way the thin leather is glued to the wood. There is also a small 3/8 tear through the leather on on the back of the box as seen in a closeup photo, circled in blue. There is some wear on the velvet lining of the tray, mainly along the top edges of the ring sections.
