This terrific Victorian signet ring is made of solid 9 carat gold, with a simple knotted rope style design throughout the piece – creating a ribbed band, and is set with a polished natural sardonyx seal. Sardonyx is a type of banded agate hardstone, in this case a deep flesh-coloured pink-red sits under a pure white crown. A single, fully natural piece of miraculous creation, formed deep in the hot, pressurised bowels of the earth. When a crest or initials are cut into a stone like this, its possible to make the cuts into the red part of the stone while leaving the surround white, giving a striking contrast. It dates from around 1870 and is in very good, fully wearable condition throughout, with light wear, an old test mark and some tarnishing to the band. It weighs 3.6 grams, measures 18 x 13 mm across the head and its ring size is 10 US / U UK – not easily resized.
