An exceptional antique Victorian bamboo music canterbury / etagere circa 1885. It features Japanese /. Chinese pyrography which was a costly hand burning technique to harden, stabilize, and accent the bamboo giving it a mottled tortoiseshell appearance, and. Hand lacquered and painted decorated shelves and panels with fine brass end caps. It measures 37″ inches high, 23″ inches wide, and 14 1/2 inches deep. As expected there is minor wear to the piece and chips to the lacquer; but overall the piece is in remarkable original condition for being approximately 130 years old. Orientalism was all the rage during the Victorian period in the British settlements of Canton, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and the Far East; and it quickly spread throughout England and Europe influencing western art, culture, furniture, and design.
