Spectacular c1880 Victorian ROSEWOOD. ENGLISH COMPENDIUM LOCKING GAME BOX. Hinged Front, Multiple Games. Dominoes, Horse Racing, Backgammon. A totally unique holiday present for yourself or someone you really really love, this is both a game box and a treasure hunt because there are so many levels to discover. The front hinged doors open to reveal a complete chess set carved from bone or similar natural material with 32 pieces, 16 each white and red with two of the pawns missing their finials. The hinged lid opens to a multiple game board which is secured in the top but can be removed for play. This has checkers and backgammon boards on one side and a racetrack on the other with a separation of one of the boards from the others. The top tray in the interior contains a cribbage scoreboard with pegs, and sets of red and white checkers (15 white, 14 red) carved out of a natural material with several showing age checking and seven antique dice. Because each die is hand carved they are different sizes. Below the cribbage scoreboard there is another section with 27 hand made dominoes. The cribbage board has a small photograph of a dapper young man, presumably an owner of this set a long, long time ago. Under this tray is another for playing cards which contains a deck (missing one card) made by the London firm W. These cards are so early they don’t even have the numbers of each suit printed on them… I guess you had to count quickly in those days. When you pull the card tray out, you find two leather dice cups, a set of six lead racing horses with riders and three scenery pieces for the horse racing game. I’ve been asked for close-ups of a couple of the pieces. Weighing over 7 pounds, the box measures approximately 12 1/2 wide, 8 1/4 deep and 6 3/4 high and, other than a small amount of warping at the left front of the cover (you can still lock the box) and missing the trim around the lock, it’s in excellent condition and the wood is in extraordinary condition for its age with a warm patina and no missing pieces as far as I can tell. Please watch my listings for what I hope is an interesting and eclectic selection of other vintage and antique items.
