This superb quality little antique English brooch / pendant is in solid 9 carat gold and set with a stunning, genuine Essex Crystal depicting a fabulously stylized monogram cypher for the initials MEG or other combination or those letters, ie GEM, EGM, MGE etc. An Essex Crystal is a natural rock crystal with a deeply rounded face, and its back is reverse hand carved and then reverse painted – giving a stunning 3d impression of depth, magnified by the rounded face that gives such life and character as cannot be imitated. This monogram cypher – the letters more decoration than readable, and mirrored – is fabulously finely crafted, with incredible detail and superb stylization, incorporating an ornate heart into the main letter M. It’s backed by a textured textile panel and is mounted for wear as either a brooch or a pendant. It dates to around 1880, is a wonderful tiny size at 23 x 18 mm and weighs in at 6.4 grams. It’s in wonderful original condition with the lightest signs of wear to the gold, and no loss or damage.
