You are looking at a Great English Victorian 1880s Antique Portable Travel/Lap Desk, Brass & MOP Inlay. A splendid Victorian portable travel or “lap” desk that was beautifully crafted in England in the second half of the 19th century; it was the “Laptop” of the age. Walnut with brass applications and beautifully inlaid mother of pearl ornaments. The hand rubbed finish is in good condition on figured solid walnut, the piece is signed “Stocker”. There is no key. Inside is a gold tooled leather writing surface, compartments for pens and stationery. Side handles are recessed on this nostalgic British antique. The piece is unusual in that it features hidden drawer compartments that are revealed by an ingenious concealed spring mechanism. Veneer is missing in a few places. Bottom split revealing a 3/16 gap. Lock has been forced open, some chipping. Some MOP inlays missing. Otherwise in good condition for its age. Closed measurements are 16″ long, 10″ deep and 5 1/2 tall.
